Next Meeting - Sunday 27th January 2008
Many Thanks to all who took part in our 1st meeting of 2008 on Sunday 6th January. The riders & their families for supporting us.
A special 'Thank You' to Neil, Andy, Andrew, Dave, Ivor & Stuart who helped all day with the marshalling & also to the 'start box crew' of Jordan, Simon, Jenky & Tom who kept the riders flowing onto the track & worked quite a sweat up getting all the bikes running !!
Our 2nd indoor meeting of 2008 is to be held at Black & Deckers on Sunday 27th January.
1000hrs 'signing on' for a 1030hrs safety briefing/start.
Remember to bring some warm clothing & hot drinks, as it will be cold...

Here's wishing you a safe 2008
Hopefully there will not be as much rain as in 2007 and we'll all be out on two wheels enjoying our motorcycling.
Now is an important time to maybe do a bit of maintenance on the bike, tyres, chains, brakes etc... to be ready for that nice dry day.....
Look out for us on the roads of Durham and have a chat with us to find out what is, or 'is not' happening in the area..
Remember... If you see any of the big yellow coloured road signs - Bends Dead Ahead and Roads To Die For .... They have been put there for a reason... (With the support of Durham County Council we will hopefully extend this scheme again this coming year)
Some new things planned for this year - watch this space.... and remember two important diary dates :

Happy Christmas...
Well it's that time of year, to wish you all a 'Happy Xmas' and 'Thank You' for all your help and support of what we having been trying to achieve over the last year..
The Easter Egg Run & BikeWise were both great events and we met a lot of people out on the roads enjoying their motorcycling in County Durham.
Durham Advanced Motorcyclists once again were out on the roads promoting safe, system riding and a big thank you to all the committee, observers and members.
The BikeWise Mini-Bike Club has gone from strength to strength and the riders are progressing so quickly and it will be interesting to see them on the roads when they get to that age !!
Sadly, once again some riders have lost their lives on Durhams roads and at this time of year we should maybe reflect on what we have done to improve your own riding and look forward to 2008..
The Easter Egg Run will be held on Sunday 23rd March and BikeWise will be held on Sunday 27th July 2008. Make sure to put the dates in your diaries & tell your friends. Best Wishes and look forward to seeing you all in 2008...

As it's near Xmas we will be trying to get a Xmas tree and if anybody has any spare decorations, tinsel etc then we can certainly use them / it......

You should all now have had an invitation via email with regards to joining our BikeWise Mini-Bike Group which we have created on the very popular 'facebook' community.The group has been set up as a 'Closed Group' - Administrative approval is required for new members to join. Anyone can see the group information, but only members can see the discussion board, the wall, videos, photos, and posted items.
This means that we can have a totally private online community area where, only members who are approved by ourselves can communicate about the Mini-Bike Club.
This is open to club members, their parents/grandparents etc...
It is another way for us to let you know what is happening with the club etc.
Please make the effort to join and get involved in some discussions etc

New Helmet Safety Rating Scheme Could Save 50 Lives A Year.
A pioneering new government motorcycle helmet safety rating scheme which could save the lives of 50 riders a year was officially launched today by Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick.
Motorcyclists account for just 1% of all road traffic, but for 20% of all those killed or seriously injured
In a world first, SHARP - the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme - will give an independent rating of how much protection a helmet can provide in an impact. Helmets will be rated from 1 to 5 stars depending how well they perform in laboratory tests.
All helmets on sale in the UK must offer the wearer a minimum level of protection, but tests show there are real differences in safety performance. SHARP's objective advice, based on rigorous testing, will help riders choose a safer helmet by measuring the extent to which a helmet exceeds the minimum standards.
Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "Our research indicates that even though all helmets have to reach a minimum legal standard, safety performance can vary by as much as 30%. The SHARP scheme being officially launched today will allow riders to select a safer helmet on the basis of a simple star rating system.
"This is a vital step forward. Motorcyclists are one of the single most vulnerable groups on GB roads today. They account for just 1% of all road traffic, but for 20% of all those killed or seriously injured. We estimate that if all riders wore helmets that scored well in our rating system, the SHARP scheme could save up to 50 lives a year."
The first SHARP ratings are expected to be available next Spring, with the majority of helmets on the market tested before the end of 2008. Early results show that good performance is not restricted to premium price helmets.

Durham Advanced Motorcyclists - Chairman steps down..
Durham Advanced Motorcyclists chairman John Matthews (left) seen here being presented with a Joey Dunlop replica by the group's secretary Bill McCready at the Annual General meeting which was held at the Bowburn Hall Hotel on Tuesday 20th November.John passed his Advanced Test on the 12th August 1998 and has worked hard for the group throughout these years, the last few as chairman.
John has handed over the 'reins' to Brian Walls who will hopefully 'drive' the group forward with continued success. (John is also actively involved in marshalling at motorcycle meetings and usually can be seen at Croft when there's a motorcycle meeting being held.)
THANKS from all of us in the motorcycle office for all your hard work over the years John - the amount of unseen work done by the committee is greatly appreciated by us and the end result of that work is that motorcyclists in Durham have the opportunity to improve their riding.
DAM was presented with a cheque on the night from Mick Alder & Alison Bonar. This has been a feature since BikeWise was founded and helps the group with it's annual running costs.
'Rain Stops Play'.....
'Rain Stops Play'...... This is the sight we were greeted with this morning after an extra hour in bed - RAIN and lots of it - so. unfortunately we will NOT be running our event at Police HQ.
Work is still continuing in the background with the council to try and find an indoor premises that we might be able to use over the winter months.. Keep checking your emails and look out on the Blog for the latest information.

Many Thanks to Donald Waller & Albert Nugent from Durham County Council who provided us with this new venue and arranged for staff to open it up for us. What a brilliant site and we were able to set up a large track using all our cones.
Anyway thanks to the Mam's, Dad's & Grandparents who came along and supported us on the day - we had a another great meeting, with the sun shining all day.
Special thanks must go to Stuart, Neil, Andy & Dave who helped Steve, Mick & I to marshall the event. Your help will continue to be needed in the future as the club learns to stand on it's own feet and grow's.... The riding was once again brilliant with Katie & Charlotte showing the way for the boys to follow and so they did -Sam, Josh, Luke, Daniel, Jordan, Dale, Sean & new members Joe (on his 'spiderman' bike) and Ben (who managed to get a few laps in at the end) . Once again some really smooth, controlled riding and you all have improved a lot since we started the club.

The next meeting for our club has been arranged for this coming Sunday,14th October. We are holding the meeting at a brand new venue, the Carrville Park and Ride Site on the outskirts of Durham.
To get there, leave the A1M at junction 62, the Durham turn off, and take the A690 towards Sunderland for a hundred yards or so. You can't miss it on your left!
Sign on will be at 10am and the safety briefing will be at 10.30am prompt.
Lets keep our fingers crossed for a dry day. If you are in any doubt about the weather on Sunday morning phone Bob on 07767 324896.

THANKS to all who turned up on Saturday at very short notice for our meeting at Aykley Heads. We will hopefully have some good news in a few weeks time about a possible indoor venue for winter & also another outdoor venue in the Durham area...

URGENT... Next meeting Saturday 15th September
Apologies for the short notice - County Hall currently has work going on which involves the removal of asbestos - so we are not allowed to use the site. There was also a problem with the HQ venue but this has now been sorted. Although this is very short notice we are running an event tomorrow.....

Well, the time has come for me to 'hang up the keys' and move on to pasture's new...So, it's 'Good Luck' to Sgt Iain Rodgers who is replacing me.
If you get half the satisfaction I've had out of the job Iain, then you'll walk away a very happy man in a few years time.
I've worked with & for some fantastic people as a result of being the motorcycle Sgt in Durham Constabulary and take away many happy memories.
To the 'motorcycle team', who I've worked with daily for the last ?? years - a BIG,BIG 'Thank You' from me, for the friendship, commitment and professionalism you have shown to me over the years.
You made it a pleasure to come to work..
