Great double act back at BikeWise 2019
Great to see Dave Coates and Andy Huddleston back in the same arena at BikeWise 2019 yesterday (21.07.2019)
Andy performed at the first BikeWise in May 1995 and then the pair teamed up from 1996 through to 2007 when Andy ‘retired’ from competitive riding. Dave has ridden every BikeWise show from 1996 through to the current one (2019)
Andy subsequently has visited every BikeWise show from 2007 and this year for the 25th he had started to ride Trials again so was happy to show his skills once again.
Dave and Andy are local riders who have skills on two wheels that most of us can only ‘dream about’. They are both great ambassadors for safer riding and promoting road safety.
We were very fortunate at BikeWise 2019 to witness their skills.

K9 team ready to give you a perfect ‘Paws Up’ display
Our K9 team are ready to let the four legged members of the Police Service show their skills once again at BikeWise 2019.
Kaizer was due to retire and join the ‘Paws Up’ club in May of this year when he would have retired from service to share his retirement with Ian & his family.
Sadly, Kaizer died suddenly after a very short illness in February.
Kaizer was a fantastic operational & firearms dog, but was also a bit of a show’man’ when Ian and he did their Batman & Robin act at BikeWise over the years.
Please take a moment to reflect on the bravery of these dogs who are daily dealing with dangerous situations with their handlers

Twenty Five (25) yrs of BikeWise shows
Who would have thought that when the ‘BikeWise team’ held their first show on the 7th May 1995 that the show would still be running and celebrating its 25th ‘Anniversary’ at this years BikeWise on Sunday (21st July). Less than a handful of the original team have now been to all the shows.
Over the years the show has welcomed thousands of people to the Durham Constabulary Headquarters at Aykley Heads whilst at the same time putting out information in relation to Road Safety and Crime Prevention. We are now seeing second and third generations of families coming to BikeWise. Opportunities to watch and meet famous names from the motorcycling world and see rare motorcycles, meet members of local motorcycle clubs, together with all the other attractions have made BikeWise a popular date on calendars.
This Sunday will be the 25th BikeWise show so come along with your bikes and families and enjoy the show that we have for you.
Dick Shepherd Triumph Collection at BikeWise 2019
If you like classic bikes the this is a must see. These bikes have never been on public display
Long time BikeWise supporter Dick Shepherd boasts an enviable collection of around 320 Triumph bikes that chart so much of the brand's incredible history. Dick makes the long trek North each year to Durham to let us see these ‘dream’ bikes.
This year Dick is bringing with him :
- Buddy Elmore’s Triumph T100R that won the 1966 Daytona 200 starting 46th on the Grid, starting the DAYTONA brand for Triumph! This bike ended nearly 30 years of US (Harley Davidson) and Canadian leadership at the 200-mile race.
- Original 1958 1st pre production Triumph Bonneville in a special Blue & White colour scheme. Again this bike has not been on public viewing
The 500 cc Triumph Tiger 100 Daytona (T100T) was developed by Triumph's Chief Engineer and designer Doug Hele and launched as a production motorcycle the following year.
The legendary Triumph 500cc racer sacrificed low-speed tractability for a big step up in power at 3,500rpm to deliver arguably the most famous Daytona race in history.
Elmore sped past the whole field to win by a full minute at an average 96mph, and into Triumph and racing folklore.
Just as powerful as its rivals but much lighter at just 315lbs, its place in history was officially recognized when the Daytona name again appeared on the Triumph 750 sport bike in 1990-91.
After the 67 Daytona win the bike was bought by an American collector and eventually Dick traced it an bought it for his collection twenty five years ago. Since the race this bike has never been seen in public so for classic race fans and any motorcycle enthusiast this is a must see. The only picture we have ben able to find is of Buddy Elmore crossing the finishing line at Daytona i 1966 (Above)

Dave Coates ‘taming the beast’ at BikeWise 2018

Once again our local Darlington based world record holder - Dave Coates will be performing at BikeWise 2019, this Sunday 21st July.
The car park at the Police HQ is looking forward to having some burning rubber ‘deposited’ on it by Dave !
This is the 25th BikeWise Show and its Dave's 24th consecutive BikeWise ( and he still doesn't look a day older !!) - Dave didn't do the first show which was on the 7th May 1995 but has been ever present since then.
A fantastic achievement and we are now seeing second and third generations of families enjoying the skills that Dave shows on two (& four) wheels - long may it continue.
Dave will be performing a couple of shows during the day ( times to be finalized and published later on this site ) and he will be available at his van throughout the day for autograph's, photo's and any questions you might like to put to him...
Dave will be using a variety of Yamaha bikes at the show including the Yamaha MT10 , MT09, MT07 his quad & the beast of them all….his Yamaha 50cc moped !!
In the early days of BikeWise, Dave and a local Trials rider Andy Huddleston ‘treated’ us with their skills on two wheels.
Andy performed at the first BikeWise show in 1995 when he was still at school as a teenager. Andy had been a junior kickstart champion and was competing very successfully in National trials events as a works Hamilton Yamaha rider.
Andy subsequently joined Durham Constabulary and very quickly progressed through the ranks and at the same time continued to perform at BikeWise until 2007.
Andy took a break from riding but has recently started riding again and will once again show his skills at this 25th BikeWise show

Parking Arrangements for BikeWise 2019
We have been receiving a few enquiries about parking arrangements for BikeWise 2018, so please read below and we’ll hopefully clarify the situation :
MOTORCYCLE PARKING – At Police HQ (All weather pitch at Police HQ) See above
DISABLED PARKING – This will be at the Rivergreen Centre at the bottom of Aykley Heads Drive(Police HQ)
(You will only be allowed to proceed to this area after speaking to BikeWise staff who will be on the main access road in the area near to the motorcycle parking)
CAR PARKING – We have two main area’s of car parking :
1 – County Hall As in previous years the car parks at County Hall will be utilized – access to the show is then via a series of steps up to the Police HQ
2 – Sniperley Park & Ride Car Park
Vehicles can be parked in this car park & we are providing Two FREE Park & Ride Bus service to and from Aykley Heads. The Park & Ride service will run regularly throughout the day and the journey should only take approx 5minutes. The bus will drop you off at Trinity School on the HQ drive and you will only have a short walk, without any steps, to the BikeWise show entrance

TT Legend John McGuinness will be at BikeWise 2019
The 23-time TT winner has been absent from the event since seriously breaking his leg at the North West 200 in '17, but returned this year with Norton in the SBK and LTW classes, and Padgetts for the Supersport races.
John retired from the SBK and LTW race, and was forced to park up at the Bungalow on the opening lap of the Senior TT when an engine bolt broke, almost causing him to crash.
Reviewing his TT, John said he doesn't “really know what we've done to deserve” the misfortune he suffered – but admits he's “ticked a few boxes” on his return.
“We'd done no practice whatsoever, everyone has been in the same boat. So I'm surprised, shocked and I've just had a chat with the boys and they've all got their head in their hands.
“Stuart Garner [Norton boss], he's got his head in his hands. He doesn't understand really what we've done to deserve it, we should have had a good, clean solid run on the bike and it hasn't happened.
“Surprised, disappointed, it would have been nice [to have gotten a result]. I'm sat at the Bungalow having not even completed a lap, and conditions were good, the boys were flying around enjoying themselves.
“Spectators were eager to listen and enjoy the Norton, and we never did anything really. So a bit disappointing. But we're here, we're safe, we've ticked a few boxes.”
McGuinness did tally up his 47th career podium after securing second in the Zero race, and admits he never thought he would see a TT podium again following his NW200 accident – adding that even to start last week's races was “a win”.
“We had a cool result on the electric bike, kept old Michael Rutter honest. Nearly 121mph lap on the electric bike for me was ace.
“To stand on the podium again, 47th podium, never thought when I was laid there [at the NW200 with my leg] snapped in half I was ever going to stand on the TT podium again.
“Ups and downs really, but big for me to be back. To even stand on the start line was a win. But [it's still] frustrating. That Senior, I just wanted a good, safe, solid result and a top 10 result was on the cards, but it wasn't to be.
“So, disappointed on one side of the coin, but good on the other side if that makes sense?”
John will return to the Isle of Man – mid August for the Classic TT where once again he will be riding for Team Winfield on their rapid 500cc Paton in the Bennetts Senior Classic TT, where he is the reigning champion .
This weekend John(and his family) will be ‘trekking’ over to Durham from their family home in Morecambe to once again support the 25th BikeWise event
John has sponsorship links with local based Hitachi Construction Machinery Ltd (formerly HM Plant Ltd) & in particular CEO John Jones, who has maintained a close link with John for a number of years.
John has visited BikeWise many times and is a true motorcycle enthusiast as well as being a racing legend and it is a unique opportunity for you to meet one of the legends of motorcycling racing.

Jamie Squibb Freestyle Motorcycle Stunt Show @ BikeWise 2019
Jamie Squibb, owner & team rider of Squibb Freestyle is travelling to BikeWise from his home in Devon to perform at BikeWise 2019 on Sunday 21st July.
Jamie last appeared at BikeWise in 2016 and was amazing.
Since then Jamie has toured the with the Nitro Circus as well as performing in his own Squibb Freestyle Motorcycle Stunt Show
Jamie rides a Kawasaki KXF450, is a 3X british champion, has ridden all over the world and has been showing off some of the best FMX tricks since 2005.
‘My riding background is I started riding at 6, I raced a bit of mx but not every weekend, I have ridden Enduro and trials, I just generally enjoy being out on bikes. I always loved jumps and by the age of 12 was in the digger building my own at home, from that point it's just progressed to where I'm at today.’
‘My favourite thing about freestyle is the feeling you get when you learn something new and getting to ride at really cool events like Arenacross, with good friends.’
‘The crowds definitely help loads, they make so much noise as soon as you ride in to the arena you can feel the energy and the atmosphere, they cheer super loud for every jump which makes you want to go bigger and bigger.’

Show us yours…. at BikeWise 2019 (Sunday 21st July)
To ‘Show us Yours’ all you have to do is bring it along to Police HQ on Sunday 21stJuly (BikeWise Show) It’s free to enter, but you need to be on the site by 09:30hrs as the site becomes pedestrianised shortly after that .
You won’t be able to take it off the site until the show ends (about 17:00hrs) as the whole of the site is pedestrianised for the event and we cannot have motorcycles being ridden through the public !!
All you have to do to register your bike is turn up at the BikeWise Van which will be at the front of the HQ building. and the people at the van will register your entry.
There are many different classes, with some lovely trophies to be won. So go on… share your pride & joy with us and lets see what ‘gems’ we have tucked away in the North East.

Riding abroad & Brexit !
An interesting article from Ride Magazine which was answered by White Dalton Motorcycle Solicitors :
Question
I have just come back from a ten-day riding break in Spain, which I can highly recommend – Malaga has some fantastic roads. But I have come home to a nasty souvenir, a €50 fine for speeding.
I have clearly been caught in a radar trap. I have heard so much conflicting information from different people that I am unsure what to do with it.
Lots of people have told me that I can simply ignore it, because the Spanish police cannot do anything within the UK jurisdiction. Other people have said pay it just to avoid any hassle – and my wife is convinced that if I ever set foot in mainland Europe again I will be carted off to jail if I don’t pay. Also, once we Brexit, will these fines have any impact at all? I am planning on going back to Andaiucia next year. Will Brexit make it more difficult?
Answer
Pay it! Now that I have told you to pay it, pay it as soon as practicable. You will not be locked up if you go to Spain but your wife has the right idea, albeit dramatically. It has entered biking folklore that you can simply ignore foreign tickets: you can’t; or at least you can’t ignore tickets issued in the European Union, while we remain in the EU.
By an EU-wide agreement a local fine, if unchallenged, becomes payable, if it isn’t paid, the fine is sent on to the local agency – in this case, the DVLA – which will deploy its enforcement officers, who are usually Magistrates’ Courts Officers. The longer that you leave it, the more steps are taken end in the worst case that I have seen, a €100 fine escalated up to just shy of £1000 – so pay your €50. On the positive side, no points go on your licence.
As to what happens after Brexit, I cannot tell you, A ‘crash-out’ will probably mean no fines, as they are enforceable under an EU treaty. While this may sound like you’ll be able to tear across Europe without worrying about fines, many European police forces have the power to seize a foreign vehicle for even minor traffic infringements and without a method of enforcing fines on a UK driver, they are more likely to use that power.
If we have a Brexit with a ‘run-off period, I would hope for at least a couple of years of things staying as they are with mutual recognition of licences and insurance and also, mutual recognition of fines. However, this is by no means certain. I really would not like to speculate how a no-deal Brexit would impact on motorcyclists traveling to the EU, but there is a pretty clear fall-back position; the 1968 Vienna Convention. Riding your own bike in Spain will certainly be possible under this, which was used before the EU and governs non-EU traffic in the EU. However, we might need separate insurance and potentially an international driving permit.
But the shape of any rules will be outside of the UK government’s power if there’s a crash-out Brexit; it will be up to the EU whether it accepts UK licences (it should as it’s currently a Euro licence); but I think insurance will require a Green Card for us in Europe (and for EU drivers coming to the UK). It will be more of a hassle to get to the EU by bike but it won’t be impossible. However, Germany and Portugal are not parties to the 1968 Convention, so I would avoid travel on your own bike there until things are clearer.
If things go horribly pear-shaped, we may be required to buy local insurance on some borders. This is what happens upon entering Morocco (a member of the 1968 Convention) if you do not have pre-existing cover for Morocco but it is not terribly expensive. How good the insurance is, I have never tested. One thing to ponder; my current insurance certificate insures me right across the EU including about four months post-Brexit so I am not sure if the insurers have actually considered the impact of a crash-out, or hard, Brexit.
